When I created this Substack, and my related Twitter account, there was a moment of decision.
And in that moment, I embraced the possibility of my own destruction — career suicide.
Speaking basic truths has become a crime.
My comfortable industry, and many others, are deeply invested in a deceitful worldview of human nature.
Honesty is always appreciated in the abstract, from a distance. Ignorant mobs cheer the idea of truth, honor, and justice, which they despise in practice. But prophets have always been persecuted. There has never been a tribe, kingdom, republic, or empire willing to embrace the full darkness of the human condition.
Comedy and mythology emerged as psychological tools, to study the disturbing implications of human behavior in a safe, digestible fashion.
Ugly epiphanies were hidden inside popular narratives, buried beneath layers of plausible deniability… shrouded in parables, allegories, metaphors.
Nonetheless, our modern world is particularly delusional, and sick. Monstrous deceptions have accumulated, and compounded, and multiplied.
To participate in Western Civilization, citizens are bullied and pressured and compelled to endorse a convoluted array of falsehoods. Subtle punishments are administered to students, employees, entrepreneurs, preachers, soldiers, celebrities, admirals, and billionaires who drift from the official Narrative.
Over time, daily affirmations of a fake, artificial reality inflict a psychological cost. Victims are encouraged to break themselves, and their sanity erodes in tiny increments.
Small acts of courage are enough to reverse this process.
It took a long time for me to overcome a pervasive environment of fraud, secrecy, and self-censorship.
Curiosity fueled me, seeking exotic insights.
Below, I have listed thirteen of the best essays I read, and analyzed, and quietly reflected upon during the past few years.
In a world drowned by cheap distractions, each of these articles is worthy of your attention. They have been listed based on their word count, from shortest to longest.
Enjoy.
