Imagine sedating people to keep them docile, then spraying them with mace because you didn't like the sound of them snoring. They were dreaming peaceful dreams, and now they're your waking nightmare. That's basically what happened.

Good article, but I would argue the left won gamergate, but it was a pyrrhic victory. AAA games still have ugly girlbosses and progressive ideology, but they radicalized millions of young men in the process.

Wouter's avatar

Not really. We did win and we won GG2.0 just a couple of years ago.

You’re calling it pyrrhic because you didn’t see the results directly but we’re talking about bringing down the juggernauts of the gaming industry. It takes a very long time.

Ubisoft is getting bought by the Chinese, Saudis took EA and Sony is getting extremely fed up of western developers. One more mistake and they will turn to others permanently.

We won, you didn’t see it.

GG well played. I just wanted to play video games, should’ve left us alone.

Andronikos's avatar

I’m torn between @Alan Schmidt’s opinion and @Wouter’s opinion on this issue.

On the one hand, companies are continuing to destroy beloved IPs. The most recent example is Ghost of Yotei, sequel to the wildly successful and beloved Ghost of Tsushima. Yotei is woke garbage and they used an LGBT Antifa woman as the character model for the main character (who is, of course, a girl boss lesbian).

The same can be said for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, The Last of Us II, Saints Row, Starfield, Suicide Squad, Mass Effect: Andromeda… I’m sure there are more I’m not remembering.

Companies, woke or not, continue to use “Body Type A” and “Body Type B” for male and female generated characters. It was a huge controversy when the creator of Lord’s of the Fallen publicly reversed it to Male and Female upon doing a poll and seeing a majority rejecting “Body Type.”

Lastly, Baldur’s Gate 3 did extremely well despite the blatant homosexuality on display. Why? Because Larian didn’t attack their fans and left the gay romance paths optional. They even patched the game so that taking those paths weren’t automatic just because you said something nice to the gay characters. So, “woke” stuff was in the game, but because the creators made a good game with a good story and were decent human beings to gamers, the “woke” stuff was glossed over by gamers.

On the other hand, a lot of those games I listed sold poorly. BioWare might be done for (to add onto Wouter’s list). Naughty Dog may be done for if that Heretic Prophet game does bad. Bethesda is surviving on nostalgia at this point (Starfield didn’t do well, but Oblivion Remastered was positively received). Many games that have been touched by Sweet Baby Inc. have done poorly.

So, we have video game companies (especially AAA) hemorrhaging money because they produce garbage and/or woke game… but they continue to produce said games anyway and continue to antagonize the “chuds” on social media and gaming news sites.

I don’t know if GamerGate really won in the end.

Aaron Kulkis's avatar

You don't seem to understand that https://thepiratebay.org/ is keeping the beloved, pre-woke versions alive. As the publishing houses fall, the trademark items and characters fall into the public domain, making them prime pickings for independent game developers who want to build a new structures on the original foundations, with NO corporation able to stand in their way.

Andronikos's avatar

What video games and/or video game characters are in the public domain?

I know of abandonware, though I don’t know if they are technically public domain. I also know of ROMs, but most of those are not public domain. Nintendo, for example, is notorious for going after ROM sharing sites and sending their lawyers after fan projects.

Aaron Kulkis's avatar

If the game was developed under the auspices of a corporation, then the copyright was assigned to a corporation, and that corporation subsequently ceases to exist, then who owns the copyright? Unlike a natural person, the fictitious person of a corporation has no heirs, therefore, nobody inherits any property, including intellectual property.

Liquidators typically sell off the physical assets. Often, they do NOT sell of intellectual assets, such as source code, nor copyrights and trademarks to products which in the latest incarnations were not moving enough product to keep the lights on.

When a company fails, intellectual property is only reassigned to a new owner IF and ONLY IF the failing company is purchased by another company (be it through a merger, or a buyout, be it a friendly or hostile takeover).

If a company goes into chapter 11 (reorganization), oftentimes underutilized and underperforming assets are sold off. Formerly popular series of games which the last 1 or 2 versions haven’t sold well may well fetch a tidy sum for name recognition purposes, and despite the wishes of woke management, the court-appointed overseer might demand that the killed-by-wokism series be sold to some other company if they’re willing to give it a shot at resurrecting the good will assocated with the name.

If on the other hand, the company goes into liquidation, chapter 7 or 13 in the U.S.A., (especially chapter 7, which tends to be wrapped up very quickly,) such intellectual property might be overlooked.

So when looking through abandonware, just look up on Wikipedia who published that series of games. Are they still in business? If they went out of business, was the company merged with or purchased by another business, or its assets? If the new company has published no more titles in that series, then most likely they are not going to assert any rights to it, because there’s no point in paying for trademarks and copyrights that you’re not going to use.

The way I look at it, Leftists also want to make money. Companies like Larian are examples of what happens when they do in fact care more for the business side of things.

The old-school Leftists understood that, in order to make effective propaganda that sells, you need to make it entertaining for the majority of people while still adding the message in some way. A few of these people have learned and have made sure to make the necessary corrections, but far too many have been radicalized to the point where either they won't back down, or people no longer trust them because they have seen their true colors (i.e. Critical Role).

I think GamerGate was an initial success, albeit riddled with issues and infighting that also in the end broke the movement up into various groups. However, victory was never really achieved culturally as the masses still have been too indoctrinated.

We won the battle, but the war goes on.

Aaron Kulkis's avatar

If you want an early example, read the autobiographical book "Radical Son" by David Horowitz. He's a Jewish, red-diaper baby former leftist, who during the late 60's and early 70's, was the editor of the extremely far left "Ramparts" magazine.

Horowitz recounts how they burned through the inheritences of several heirs of multi-millionaires (at a time when a loaf of bread was $0.10, and a new 4-door car cost about $2000, and a 3-bedroom 2-story house could be had for $10,000.... so a million dollars back then is equal in purchasing power to about 30x that today.)

As a veteran gamer who doesn't read a single page, or tweet, by those ideologues, or ideology-shaped drones that populate the writing teams at mass videogame e-zines, the destiny of the companies you list isn't shaped by GamerGate (to which I was sympathetic, as relative as its insight was), but other, wider socio-economic forces.

Schweg's Take's avatar

Gamergate's paradigm shift is still shattering foundations of SJW strongholds. The allopathic medical system losing credibility, the bar association in the law world under assault, men are leaving academics in their emptying debt fueled universities, the sports world has no stars, the music world has no anthems, the movies no longer direct culture, and no one watches TV. Their control structures are failing in every way in increasing frequency. The Bible is still the best seller no media will talk about.

The Brothers Krynn's avatar

Agreed

Aaron Kulkis's avatar

How?

Good videogame programmers and 3D and 2D digital architects and designers are doing well for themselves and their audience without leftist corporation management sucking up a bunch of money at the expense of the those who actually do the work nor at the expense of the customers.

Meanwhile, the AAAcompanies are losing their shirts and going bankrupt due overdosing on girl bosses and other retardery..

Ditto for independent comics vs the rapidly approaching demise of DC and Marvel comics, and the girlbosses penchant for turning ever heroic character into Afro-Mezo-American Trans-lesbians.

As soon as DC or Marvel dies, the characters will no longer be under trademark protections, and the talented comic book authors who write and illustrate stuff that comic book buyers actually want to read will be swimming in money, while at the same time the prices will be dropping. Arkhaven is proving this is a profitable market as long as there are no girlbosses screwing everything up with trendy misandrism.

I see gamergate as the cultural lefts Vietnam (not my idea), where they technically won all the battles but lost the war to a guerrilla force they couldn’t understand.

Steven C Watson's avatar

That would be ironic: the "guerrilla force they", the US, "couldn’t understand" was... the cultural left. ;-)

cxj's avatar

No it wasn’t. It was the VC jungle fighters, not the lazy boomers who hated the idea of serving their country and leaving the decadent party.

Also it’s an analogy for gamergate you fucking dumbass, fuck off with your smug little progressive winks and die in a napalm strike.

If it looks like a Red play, it usually is a Red play. What are we seeing now? Weapononised students and academia; weaponised MSM; Weaponised Hollyweird; The Narrative. What did we see in the Sixties? Ditto. Hanoi Jane marched then as she has been marching now; the FBI were acting strange then as they are acting strange today. Moscow had fifty years to get compromat on J Edgar; a weirdo tranny if ever ther was one. You had Walter Kronkite infamously lying about Tet on TV. MLK Jr. was a Black Commie run by Jewish Commies.

I don't need to go on: we've been taking it up the arse from the same clowns for a century or more.

The Vietnam War was lost on the campuses and in the media more than by the Pentagoons; though they played their part. Charlie was beaten at Tet; from then on MACV was confronting the NVA main force and trashing that too.

It pains me to say it, but the American soldier has no real peers even when hobbled by political generals; loony military theories; and pols that haven't a clue about fighting wars.

Vox Day's avatar

I'm mildly skeptical about how deep that in-depth analysis will go. He isn't speaking to any of the original GGers that I know of, including the one who started it all. He certainly hasn't contacted me.

Billionaire Psycho's avatar

Longtime fan of you Vox Day! I'm sure Lomez would love to hear from you if you would get in touch with him

Al DuClur's avatar

If Lomez really wants to paint an accurate picture of Gamergate then he will get in touch with Vox and others who were originally involved. Not doing so suggests he has a ready-made narrative he wants to present and isn't too worried about the facts.

Billionaire Psycho's avatar

Lomez is my personal friend and I can tell you for a fact that you are wrong on his motives. He held an open invitation for anyone interested to submit a book proposal to him on this subject. Someone such as yourself could've submitted a book proposal

Will Martin's avatar

Lomez is fucking Jewish. Nothing he says about Gamergate counts for shit.

The seldom-mentioned corollary to the Dunning-Krueger Effect: people who are competent assume everyone else is competent too, so they can speak in a kind of shorthand which also shows off their insider status.

Cooks are especially bad at this. I once had a weird piece of meat I didn't want to waste so I asked what to do with it. The answer I got was "smoke then braise"

Huh? At what temperature? For how long? Braise in what liquid?

It's obvious to anyone who's been through years of cooking school. I mean, duh.

Well, one could start with the podcast linked by Ryan Davidson above. There were too many significant events to cover in a single article or podcast. I missed most of it at the time it was happening, aside from noticing some crazy harassment going on.

As silly as it sounds, the best and most complete article on the entire thing is the Encyclopaedia Dramatica one: https://edramatica.com/GamerGate

Video games have been a core part of our culture for decades now, trying to invade and corrupt them as they did was a huge strategic error by the Left. As you say, it awakened a generation of young men who would otherwise have been happy to spend their days in virtual worlds, not paying attention to the physical world. You could draw a line from the aftermath of Occupy Wall Street in 2011 and the rise of "Racism" in mainstream media, to Gamergate, to the rise of Trump.

As an aside to that I think that Libertarianism as it has existed in the US since the Tea Party days is a reaction to the Leftist invasion of every space. I see it as existing primarily for those who don't subscribe to the orthodoxy but who are too afraid to challenge it directly. They would say: "Let them do what they want as long as they don't infringe on me." but what they really meant was: "I won't go against you, please leave me alone." I don't see as many of them now as I did in 2016.

Gamergate was an attempted SJW takeover of video games. Gamers fought back and fought back hard.

Universities? They lay flat and the highly illiberal left walk all over them.

It was than being called racist.

"When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things"

The playful childish energy faded for a reason. We aren't kids anymore, and our enemies aren't just promiscuous histrionic women. There is no place for playfulness in the existential crisis gripping our civilization. This is no game. This is war.

Kimberly Steele's avatar

Thank you for this. I have not played video games since I was a little girl in the 1980s because for whatever reason they make me motion sick. Being completely outside gamer culture, I really didn’t know what was going on with GamerGate, but I knew it was important. This is the most concise explanation I have ever seen of the social and societal implications of GamerGate, so once again, thank you.

_ikaruga_'s avatar

The problem was that for some reasons (probably tied to the degrees they hold), "attention whores" (as you label them with some kindness) or genuinely troubled & culturally programmed subjects ended up being involved in videogames (which, I agree, they don't play nor do they enjoy playing; including those they "review" and "write about") while having a massive social media presence.

This led to the infection afflicting everything political and social at the same time infecting the videogame "shop window", the social media discourse on vgames. It is fewer than 1% of people, but they make "their" voice heard the most, the loudest, and most offensive, and since the other 99+% are silent on social media and absent (or again silent) from e-zines, and the "holiness spirals" of Spandrellian memory rule the public scene, companies thought it wise to kowtow to what they knew was nonsense.

However, the problem is that it never stops unless it is stopped (that's why "spirals").

All the modernist rightoids who boomerpost on videogames as a "waste of energy" would be utterly horrified to find out the biggest pastimes in Christendom (aka Proper Catholic Christendom) were wargaming (for men), larping, and cosplaying (for women) outside of the usual reading, writing poetry and short stories, painting, community theater, and community musical performances people more commonly hear about.

you basing your prot anti-societies on the fetishes of post-abortive "white" women (it was so bad that in 1861, prot women were Martyring their own Babies in effigy of God so often that their first averaged around 10 years old, had around 3-5 by 15, and 10 by 30). Worse is then to call this fetish-baiting as "masculinity."
